Frequently Asked Swim Lesson Questions
DuPage Swimming Center answers some of the most popular questions asked by customers about our swimming programs. Please click on the (+) to reveal the answer and the (–) to hide it.
How warm is your pool?
Our teaching pool is heated to 93°F to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable swimming environment. In addition, the teaching pool is 3 – 3 ½’ deep so that children can feel more secure during their lessons. Our lap pool is heated to 83°F for comfortable lap swimming.
Where can I park during lessons?
We have two parking lots. One lot is directly outside our facility. When that lot is full, we have another privately owned parking lot adjacent to the building parking lot.
What do I do when I arrive for my child’s lesson?
Please swipe your key tag at the front desk, and then proceed through the locker rooms to the pool deck to wait for your class. The on-deck coordinator will check your child in, and tell you the location of his/her class. Your child can sit at the class location to wait for his/her lesson to begin.
When is my child water-safe?
We believe that a child is truly water-safe when they can swim 400 yards continuously, with good technique. When a child achieves this milestone in our program, they will have confidence in deep water and the endurance necessary to be competent and efficient in most swimming environments.
What do I do if my child does not move up to the next level in group lessons?
All children learn at different speeds. If your child is struggling with a particular skill, or expresses concern about his or her lessons when at home, please let us know so that we can work with you to find a solution! In order to progress most efficiently through our program, we recommend that you attend lessons consistently throughout the year. Similar to school, when skills are not continuously practiced, many children regress. Therefore, it is important to schedule lesson sessions as consistently as your family’s schedule allows.
How do I find out how my child is doing in group lessons?
We have “Parent Feedback Week” approximately half-way through each session, to let you talk with your child’s instructor. Classes end 5 min. early during this week so that you can get feedback from your instructor and find out what level your child will be in for the next session. You will also find out the skills your child has mastered, and the skills that require additional work. If you miss class during this week, please let our on-deck coordinator know so that we can evaluate your child at a later date.
How do I cancel a Group Lesson class for my child?
We have a 2-hour cancellation policy for Group Lessons. If you need to cancel a lesson for any reason, please give us 2 hours notice, and you will not be charged for that lesson. If you cancel with less than 2 hours notice, you will be charged a $5.00 fee to reschedule the class. If you call and the front desk staff is unable to answer the phone, please leave a detailed voicemail with your name, your student(s) name, the date and the time of the lesson that you would like to cancel. Because your student is occupying a spot in our classes, we cannot cancel classes within 2 hours of the lesson without a fee. Failure to cancel or show up for a student’s class will forfeit the lesson for the missed class.
What do I do if my child cries during swim lessons?
It is normal for a child to cry when first starting lessons. To quickly acclimate your child to swim lessons, the best thing that you can do is leave the pool deck immediately and watch lessons from our classroom. If your child can see you during lessons, they will be frustrated that they cannot be with you, so it is best for you to remain out of sight. Make sure to praise your child on a job well done when the lesson is completed. Remember, this process will be harder on you than it will be on your child. If your child is still reluctant to participate in lessons, let us know so that we can work with you to find a solution.
How long is credit on my account good for?
All credits expire one calendar year from the date of purchase.
Can I leave during my child’s class?
You must remain on our premises at all times during your child’s class. This is to ensure that you are available if your child has a medical emergency or needs your assistance in any way. Parents who drop their child off will have their child immediately removed from lessons.
Should my child wear goggles to lessons?
This is a matter of personal preference, however, we encourage using goggles to help your child get used to putting his/her face in the water. Goggles help protect your child’s eyes from the water, and they allow your child to see what’s around them while they are swimming. If your child has lost their goggles, or if you need to purchase goggles, please stop by the front desk at our center to check out our selection.
What should I bring to my child’s lesson?
Make sure to bring your child’s swimsuit and towel. We have locker rooms with showers, so if you would like your child to shower after his/her lesson, then you should bring shower toiletries as well.
Is there an age limit for private and semi-private lessons?
We do not have an age limit for private lessons. All ages are welcome.
Where do I sit during my child’s lesson?
We have a viewing room for parents that overlooks our pools. We ask that parents sit in the classroom during lessons to prevent possible distractions on the pool deck.
Can I take a picture of my child during his/her lesson?
Feel free to take pictures/video of your child during lessons. Please, however, respect the privacy of other patrons and be sure to take pictures of only your child.
How can I leave a message for my private lesson instructor?
Please call the front desk to leave a message for your private instructor. We will contact them immediately on your behalf.
How early should I arrive for my child’s lesson?
Most parents show up about 5-10 minutes prior to the start of lessons, because it gives them time to get their child changed and settled on the pool deck before classes begin.
Can I switch from Group Lessons to Private Lessons, or from Private Lessons to Group Lessons?
Yes, if you want to switch the type of lesson that your child is taking, just let the front desk know. We will transfer the credit in your account and apply it to your new lessons.
May my child wear jewelry during lessons?
Your child can wear jewelry during his/her lessons; however, we do not recommend it. Rings and earrings often fall off during lessons and become distractions. As such, we advise parents to remove their child’s jewelry prior to lessons.
My child has long hair. Should I tie it back for lessons?
Yes, long hair is difficult to swim with because it can cover your child’s eyes. We advise that parents either tie long hair back with a hair tie, or cover long hair in a swim cap.
What are my payment options for the lessons?
We accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards. We also offer payment plans where you can pay as you go. If you are interested in a payment plan, you must sign a Payment Plan Agreement at the front desk that will indicate the amount due and dates for the entire session.
How many times per week should my child take lessons?
Most children have lessons 1-2 times per week; however, some children attend 3-4 times per week. The number of lessons that you choose to schedule for your child is really a matter of personal preference. The most important thing to keep in mind is consistency. Just like anything else, practice makes perfect, and the more your child practices swimming skills, the quicker you will see results.
